Coober Pedy: Feb 19

Coober Pedy, what a unique town! In this opal mining town, people live underground to escape the heat. They mined tunnels into the sides of hills and have now decorated them to look like regular houses with floors, walls, lights and decorations. We were lucky enough to sleep in an underground hostel which is always 23C with no AC and no heat. Living underground was awesome! We also went to see an old opal mine which was filled with interesting stories. We spent part of the afternoon at Josephine’s Gallery, a place where wild kangaroos who are found injured are taken to heal. We were lucky enough to be able to feed the kangaroos a snack and then the owner brought out a baby kangaroo for feeding time.

A welcome sign at the edge of town
